I’m in Australia and want to call home. I have the international plan set up on my cell, but its still more expensive than a calling card. If I use a calling card from my cell, does ATT charge me the minutes as well? In other words, will I be paying for the calling card AND $1.29 a minute for the call by ATT?

Yes. I am using that. I just dial local access number and then use calling card for the long distance international call. You can get a calling card online for very cheap international calls using local access numbers.
It sounds like you’re using an AT&T cell phone in Australia that’s set up to be able to make local calls there as well as call internationally, at least back to the US – but you don’t like the $1.29/min they’re charging you to make the calls to the US.
You can use a calling card for calls to the US and the only charge from AT&T will be for the call to the local access umber in Australia. Find the calling cards with the best rates from Australia to the US city you’re wanting to call.
