A calling card is simply a business card with your name on it.
Before the age of phones and email, people would have to drop by someone’s house of business to see if they were home. They would present whomever answered the door with a card stating their name and any titles they have.
If the person you wanted to visit wasn’t home, your card would be waiting for them so that they would know you had stopped by.
Today its much easier to call for an appointment, so calling cards are much more rare. They’ve effectively been replaced by business cards with your name, title, and contact information.
